From those small beginnings as a family run business founded by William Sugden in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, we have evolved to become one of the country’s foremost workwear and corporate clothing specialists.
From just one sewing machine in the back of the shop, William Sugden, his four sons and daughter grew the business enough to move to a factory at Water Lane Mills in Cleckheaton. The ‘Water Lane’ brand proved so successful that further factories were opened across Yorkshire in both Barnsley and Wakefield.
We soon acquired our own weaving mills and during the course of the first and second world wars, we produced close to six million shirts and work suits for the armed forces.
In 1968, we joined forces with the famous Double TWO shirt-makers, renowned for high quality shirt production with industry leading innovation. This relationship enabled both companies to share expertise and thrive in the modern marketplace.
With an enviable reputation as the leading supplier of work shirts and uniforms to UK Police Forces and Emergency Services, we are proud to clothe a large number of local and national companies across a variety of business sectors.
Over the years we’ve evolved from simply providing clothing. Embracing the latest technology and leading the way with innovation, we were the first company in the UK to use CAD systems to design our fabrics and were the first to offer a complete managed uniform service, offering a total clothing package developed to the clients’ needs assisted by a full stock management system.
